It turns out the cast of ‘Saved by the Bell’ weren’t just dating each other at the fictional Bayside High School. Mark-Paul Gosselaar, better known as Zack Morris while on the hit show from 1989 to 1993, admitted to Anna Faris on her “Unqualified” podcast that he dated some of his fellow cast members. More specifically, he mentions Elizabeth Berkley, the actress who played Jessie Spano.
“You’re in an environment — you know how it is,” Gosselaar, now 44, said of working on set with the likes of Berkley, Tiffani Thiessen (Kelly Kapowski), and Lark Voorhies (Lisa Turtle). “When you’re working on a set, and we were young, there’s no one around really. I mean, you work and live in a bubble.”
Gosselaar went on to say that he didn’t have much of a social life outside of the show. His mother acted as his manager, driving him from home, to the set, and back. “You’re in your cars and you come to set and you’re with these beautiful women and you’re not going to school, so you don’t have a lot of choices,” he added. “People say, ‘Well, didn’t you go out?’ Not really.”
This isn’t the first time Gosselaar has mentioned just how close the ‘Saved by the Bell’ cast members were off-camera.
“All of us dated at one point or another — it was incestuous,” he told People back in 2009. “Sometimes the girls would gang up on the guys. Tiffani and Elizabeth would hate me, and then they’d hate Lark because Lark was talking to me, and Mario [Lopez] was supposed to side with someone. All that stuff you did in high school, like, ‘How could you talk to him?’”
Regardless of any dating drama, Gosselaar still expressed so much love for his former cast members during their reunion. “They’re a good bunch of people,” he said. “It makes me proud.”
